About The Artwork

Inspired on the work of franco-belgian and south american cartoon authors, this piece belongs to a series that tries to bring to sculpture the idea that "one image equals 1000 words". By choosing the human nature as subject matter, the identification is immediate but still open to a infinite possibilities of interpretation, depending on the viewer. This is brought to focus by the choice of modeling in ceramic just the vital elements to depict a emotion - eyes, nose and mouth - the rest would just be noise. By placing the resulting piece in a particular context, the cartoon situation is created. In this particular case, the piece is the realization that despite one's culture of tolerance and respect for different views of the world, there is still the temptation to close those so different from one self that they feel toxic.

Sandra Borges is born in 1979 in Lisbon. The sculptor mostly based her work on human behavior. Sometimes looking through the stereotypes, sometimes through the eyes of a individual, it is always about how one's personality is formed and how one relates to the other and in society. Working only with Portuguese stone (marbles, limestone`s and breccia), she also mix it with other media if the idea demands it. The result is very personal way to make art objects that link the tradition of stone carving to other materials and plastic languages.
