*CHANCE REALIZED* Part of the 'Floor Scraps I Can Reach From My Chair' series, let me first say the title of the series is somewhat of a misnomer. All the pieces in the series do use floor scraps I could reach from my chair, but also from the surrounding studio floor. I did start with just from my chair, but there were too many intriguing tidbits just out of my reach, and each trail I sniffed out led me to eventually, well, stand up. While the idea for the series started as somewhat of a lark, as my studio space was at that time in a somewhat more, let's say, scattered phase, as I worked to finish a piece each day a surprising thing started to emerge. While I was used to finding things on the ground on my walks to and back from my studio that worked and fit and flowed (see 'Abstract Placing' series), apparently it also succeeded when the area was shrunk. Perhaps that song is right - "we don't always get what we want, but we get what we need". Each day, as I worked the floor, crawling under the table and around corners, that underneath voice began to speak - "yes, no, no, not that one" - eventually leading to a collection of scraps that told a story. For "Be Speckled," the story happened to be one of browns and darks pinks and shadows with a slight frothy sprinkling bubbling underneath. By fitting together pieces of chance and circumstance, a work developed that embraces those two in its arms and stands forth, lightly shining in it's rightness.

ART, LIKE LIFE, HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT. A whiff of control; some semblance of steering. And belief of a firm grip. But we're grasping at the air beneath our feet. The truth is: we don't hold anything. It comes in bits and bobs, dashes and jots - brief glimpses, spaces, sliding out of sight. For truth, is to feel it slip away. And then to try to create it. - - - Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, & often both, my art reflects the intersection between logic and intuition, real and abstract, time and the timeless. - - - - - - - - - Steven Tannenbaum grew up in New Jersey, where he learned how to garden and defend himself. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, and his art is in public & private collections across the US, Israel, and England. You can find more of his work at: www.whatifind.com
