About The Artwork

mixed media photo collage on board, 12”x9” The iconic corner of Haight and Ashbury when it was still a quiet forest. My new series is called Time Travel Photos. Imagine if I had a camera that simultaneously took a photo of the present and the past. I am still looking for that camera. I want to show San Francisco as it is now and as it was back in a more natural state before the city happened. Time Travel Photos are handmade collages that show spots in San Francisco where I have cut and sliced present-day photographs and interwoven photos of natural places that represent how things looked before. Each work is an image of an urban space in San Francisco with the natural past emerging through. For example, creeks once again run down 18th Street and dunes reappear in the Panhandle. Tidal flats and marshes will fill the financial district in the pieces to come. While I appreciate before-and-after juxtapositions with historic and present-day photos, this series is something entirely different. A finished Time Travel Photo is really one image of a single place. Each collage shows a place where time loosens allowing echoes of past realities to easily emerge through into our present.

I work primarily in mixed media, collage and landscape painting. My work has included maps, postcard-themed art and mail art projects. In 2013 I began moving away from found ephemera and shifted to making my own material. This started with a series called Collagescapes. With Collagescapes, I start by painting paper with areas of color representing the palette of a specific place. Next, I cut up the paper into hundreds of small pieces. The final steps are to randomize the pieces and then reassemble them in various geometric patterns. Collagescapes are both landscape paintings and collages. My latest work is a series called Post-Folk Art. It is a nod to the color palettes found in costumes, textiles, pottery and other forms of traditional Kashubian and Polish folk art.
