I Think Therefore I Exist Artwork

I am inspired by a strong belief in science over religion. My inspiration for subject matter comes from the current politics and religious beliefs that deny the growth of science. The mosaics of Ravenna, Italy and artworks of artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Robert Rauschenberg are a strong influence in my use of materials. This work was created on a stretched canvas. On this piece I used oil and acrylic paint, marker, crayon, pencil, acrylic gesso with sand, pieces of canvas and paper, crystals, 23K gold leaf, a smaller stretched canvas and glue. Thin pieces of wood are nailed to the outer edges. This work should be framed using a floating frame since there is wood around the edges and the smaller stretched canvas is not flush with the main canvas. I would hope that the viewer understands that even though religion had a purpose in the past as a stepping stone to now, it is science that must take over for the importance of our future. Collage never made sense to me as a fine art until I studied artists who were able to tell stories through mixed media. Tactile objects and materials would tell a better story for me of the tension between science and religion. This is my first piece of a series dealing with mixed media and the tension between science and religion.
