About The Artwork

In 2008, political and civil entities celebrated 12 centuries of the existence of Morocco, voluntarily or through ignorance, the message was implicitly conveyed that Morocco had not existed before the arrival of the Arabs, when its history dates back at 2500 BC. The Amazigh Juba II is the son of King Numidian Juba first. He reigned over Numidia then Mauritania from 25 BC to 23 AD, His capital was Caesarea (now Cherchell, in Algeria), Construction and sculpture projects in Caesarea and Volubilis presented a rich mixture of styles Egyptian, Greek and Roman architecture. Cleopatra Selene II, his wife influenced him to exercise good government policy. He was a scholar, his works of travel and botany were widely commented on and taken up by the Latin elite although he wrote in Greek like all the scholars of the time. He was a personality respected by the Amazighs. The day after independence, Moroccans claimed to have seen King Mohammed V on the full moon, the legitimate king, the idol of the people who was exiled by the occupation. It seems that the good king may appear on the moon for his people, before Neil Armstrong manages to take the first step of humanity there. Juba II on the moon, a sarcastic tribute to a king who was forgotten, although replicas of his bust are still present in Moroccan archaeological museums. It is a mixed technique, a dominant of earth and ocher colors which predominate on the Moroccan desert landscapes; juxtaposed with a burlap - omnipresent in several works - sewn on a thin canvas as if it conceals a disturbing reality, and the collage of an image of a bust of Juba II as a lingering reality only in the memory of the literati.
