About The Artwork

Lama or Lamassu is a Sumerian Goddess, often depicted as having a human head, a body of an ox or a lion and bird’s wings. Although she is a human female/animal hybrid, she can also be referred to as a male (calls for gender blurring). A celestial being from ancient Mesopotamian Religion. Her sculptures, belonging to the Assyrian style, are some of the largest ever made. Lamassu is also related to the constellations and the zodiac. The first representations of this Goddess appeared around 3000 B.C.. Today we can find examples of these in Iran and museums such as the Louvre, the National Museum of Iraq, The NY Museum of Art and the British Museum. She was a household protective spirit of the Babylonian people. A protector, placed as a sentinel at different gates, such as palace and city entrances. She is represented in this work as a rather glamorous woman, smoking a cigar, with the tower of Babel in the backdrop. The ancient Jewish/Christian religions were influenced by Lamassu; for example, the four gospels were related to each of her physical characteristics: the human being, the lion, the eagle and the bull. This Goddess was also “revered” by westerners during the occupation of the British (10th army) in Iraq and Iran (1942 to 1943). They adopted her image as their insignia. Later on, she was included in certain official U.S. symbols. Lamassu also featured in modern fantasy stories and even as a character in computer games. In this work she makes her own choice and assumes herself as a contemporary female. She can be seen as an exotic and glamorous creature; she is iconic, powerful and confident. The Goddess represents a woman ready to protect herself and those she loves. She is surrounded by floating jellyfish, a reminder of the ephemeral nature of time – it passes by and after a while there isn’t a trail left as a reminder. History goes by and soon gets forgotten. That is why "memory" is important; Lamassu is a reminder of a past we unfold, in order to create the future. "She" resisted being erased; continuing present in our lives as a young, beautiful and fertile woman, who will “give birth” to a better era.
