As I painted this piece, I contemplated what I would name it. Among them were: smile, hide and seek, play, reflections, mirrors, illusions. And although these are all elements of the painting, they all came together at the end, as the painting came together with all the matte, glossy, and reflective surfaces, to form a greater experience. The result is irresistibly interactive, an artwork that invites and entices. You will gladly be lost in the maze of mirrors. From the amount of time I spent with the finished piece, putting it in different rooms, in different lighting, and most of all, noticing myself in it and playing with my reflection, there is one name that came to me that fit it perfectly and that is Narcissus. The sharp edges are balanced with soft colors, the reflective surfaces with matte finishes brought to you by acrylic paint, vinyl, and mirrors. And when you see “it,” you will smile. I finished this painting at night, and waited for the sunlight the next morning because something magical happens at 2:00pm in my living room where the sun rays shine through the blinders and dance at the whim of the wind. I wanted to see how they would greet my painting but it was a cloudy day. I waited for the next day, longing for the sun and alas it came in the afternoon and met the reflective surface of my painting and I witnessed them getting to know each other, a gentle beautiful encounter. In the images, you can see how the painting looks with the sun rays upon them. I have included two images with my own reflection in them to portray how reflective the surface is. In order the enhance the hypnotic viewing experience, this painting is best paired with Liquid Spear Waltz by Michael Andrews or Cellar Door by Michael Andrews. Painting was featured at the "Self-Portrait" show in Copper Kettle in Spring 2022.

Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Shushanik Karapetyan is a New York based artist. Her work has been showcased at the National Association of Women Artists, Governors Island, BRIC, La Bodega Gallery, LIC Arts Open, Site: Brooklyn Gallery, and Art Mums United. Shushanik's paintings are informed by her work as a gestalt psychotherapist, placing significance on the present moment, being attuned to both internal processes and external influences as she works on a piece. While paintings begin with some form of structure (i.e. a seascape or a landscape), this structure is tentative and flexible and is often guided by moment-to-moment decisions, whether it’s the choice of brush, color, texture, or movement in the painting. There is often a repetitive piece to her work such as pointillist strokes with a filbert brush or sweeping long strokes with a flat brush. She is inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, often communicating femininity, sensuality and organic motifs, as well as impressionist artists like Georges Seurat and Claude Monet, tapping into the ability of the human eye to blend points of colors on their own.
