Emotions can be represented in visual art through color, shape, form, line, value, space, and texture. Art transmits subtle emotions that are difficult to convey with words. Visual art is a combination of memories and prospective perception. We consolidate and activate our memories and our experiences of the visible and perceptual world, and this enables us to appreciate an artwork. We are also capable of using the same skill in the opposite direction; we can translate the real world into a subjective perception, a masterpiece of imagination, metaphor and allegory.
Bright colors evoke positive emotional responses. The psychology of color: light purple creates a feeling of peace thus relieving tension; light purple lifts the spirit, encourages creativity. Appetizing ice cream and cake are symbols of a joyful celebration. Sweet motifs remind us of the brightest moments in life. Golden confetti and cookies burst at the surprise party. We all can be children at any age and have fun!
Benefits: Julia F. Christensen, a neuroscientist at the Warburg Institute at the University of London, suggests that art engages us in ways other pleasures do not and can “help overwrite the detrimental effects of dysfunctional urges and craving.”
