The Butterflies Collage

This piece is a three-dimesional representation of all that is alive within us. It is the changes happening inside, the perpetual flux we find ourselves in, that defines us as human. Growth tends to come with feelings of anxiety, fear, discomfort, and a slue of other emotions with generally negative connotations that also shape the person we are to be. This piece invites the viewer to embrace the painful aspects of growth as they are a true signature of our lives and can be just as valuable as other emotional processes. The butterflies sit not flat and dead but with wings aloft, mingling through the human anatomy dynamically. Though fully dissected, the human subject stands calm and comfortable with the flutter of activity happening inside of him. The top, bottom, and sides of the box remain open, accepting the ebb and flow of dust, taking on a second life by means of the dead material it collects over time, further evidence of those who have lived.
