Like Jean Dubuffet, I believe objects have power. In my 'Perambulations" series, each found object is carefully placed for maximum impact in creating the primary emotion of the piece; in this case it involves the weight of identity we all carry around. - - - Perambulation, NOUN: a walk around a territory (a parish or manor or forest etc.) in order to officially assert and record its boundaries. Type of: walk. The act of walking somewhere. Also known as "beating the bounds." This piece was made during a period when I felt like I was lugging around a lot - my identity heavy with baggage. It began as an abstract placing (a collection of objects fit together to flow), and then the placings began to turn into a figure moving, each with its own distinct expressive emotion. **NOTE** This piece is a great example of one of my guiding principles (and one Francis Bacon embraced): "where intention and circumstance meet there is the accident that works" - initially there was just a body (no arm), but the pen capsule leaked, and left a streak of ink perfectly across the canvas with a hand at the end. Viola: this person is holding themself up a bit against the strain. ~~~ SUBJECT MATTER: Lead, Leaning, Loss

ART, LIKE LIFE, HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT. A whiff of control; some semblance of steering. And belief of a firm grip. But we're grasping at the air beneath our feet. The truth is: we don't hold anything. It comes in bits and bobs, dashes and jots - brief glimpses, spaces, sliding out of sight. For truth, is to feel it slip away. And then to try to create it. - - - Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, & often both, my art reflects the intersection between logic and intuition, real and abstract, time and the timeless. - - - - - - - - - Steven Tannenbaum grew up in New Jersey, where he learned how to garden and defend himself. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, and his art is in public & private collections across the US, Israel, and England. You can find more of his work at: www.whatifind.com
