About The Artwork

This art is inspired by the Chachapoyan Peruvian mummies. The Chachapoyans were a Pre-Columbian civilization that pre-dated the Incans, and they fought them fiercely. The Incans gave them the name The Cloud People because they lived up in the mountains and cliffs. The backgroundof the painting is styled after a Greek Orthodox icon because the Chachapoya revered their dead. I gold leaved the painting before I glazed it with oil, so that the gold would subtly show through just like an ancient icon.

I can never stop painting because there are so many things in my head trying to get out. Painting for me is a battle with the canvas to get it to express my inner mind. My painting often reflex in inner struggle between mania and depression, and the turmoil my mental illness causes. I paint mummies because I fear them and yet see the dark beauty of someone preserved from the ravages of time. My art is the dichotomy the darkest of human emotion and a strong desire to touch the beauty of the sunset. Since before I can remember I have been inthralled to art. From a young age I had a strong desire to do things differently then those around me. That desire leaded me to discover my own distinct art style before I left high school. I spent most of my collage years in developing a mixed media panting technique as unique as my style. After collage I worked as an art conservator restoring antique pantings, sculptures, and frames to their original glory. Being so close to a wide array of art from many centuries has given me exposure to technique and materials not taught today. My art has won many awards for my art including being feature Young Masters 2005 exhibit where my art hung in the DMA. During high school my art was featured Reflections 2006, 2005, and VASE AP category 2005, 2006. More recently my work appeared in the summer and fall 2016 issues of BellaOnline’s Mused Literary Review. visit my personal website www.ekendrick.com.
