About The Artwork
Mixed media. Two Buzzards (with certificate - natural deaths), deer fur hide (skinned and tanned by artist), feathers, bones, seeds, driftwood, branches and twigs, acrylics, resin, fake flowers and forest glitter-balls! This piece aims to represent the whole cycle of life and death. The intention in my work is not to shy away from any aspects of this great cycle, but to celebrate and honour the whole, to see great beauty in death as well as in life. To be reborn, in any context, always requires a death first. Here is the rebirth of this Buzzard, who died as road-kill, was given to a taxidermist, and then eventually came to me as reference material to help me create a computer model of a 'generic eagle' that would then help an American pharmaceutical company sell more drugs. At that time I was a CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) Artist, working for advertising agencies in London. Those days are gladly behind me, but I promised this beautiful Buzzard that I would do my best to honour it and make good some of the commercial and manipulative use it was originally used for. I am now blessed to live in a forest where these birds soar high in the valley every day. I meet young Buzzards making their first attempts at flight, I watch their aerial manoeuvres, catching thermals above the giant Larch trees and occasionally swooping down into our garden. I am in awe of these beautiful Kings and Queens of the valley, and wanted this piece to convey the power and beauty of this creature, and of all the creatures of the forest. The deer hide, and some of the bones were a gift from our dog who is a natural hunter. Feathers come from many birds, most native, some found while travelling. There are seeds and roots of sacred plants from Africa, and driftwood from the river at the bottom of the valley. But let us also remember that many feather dusters and glitter-balls also sacrificed themselves for this piece! This piece is also about my own path towards redemption. Close contact with Nature, and with some of the peoples of this planet who still hold deep knowledge of the mysteries within Nature, have been instrumental in me finding some inner peace and providing me with endless inspiration for my art. To me, the forest is our Mother Earth's most beautiful and magical art gallery.

"My vision of life is one of wonder and awe. Colourful, deep, and endlessly interesting if you have the curiosity and courage to look from unusual angles, and it is to be lived and loved as fully as you can." Born in Australia and schooled in Nigeria, Scotland and England, adventure and travel have always featured in Ben’s life. He searched for inspiration and escape from the mundane through extensive periods of travelling, with extreme sports and extreme partying featuring prominently. He funded this, after art college, by first working as an architectural model-maker, working on many high profile projects including The Millenium Dome, Tate Modern, The V&A Museum extension, and the Sydney Olympic Stadium. As the new and emerging CGI (computer generated imagery) software began taking over the industry, he relearnt his trade and became a 3D artist. He lived the high life in London and New York, working on high profile advertising campaigns and after a few years, became a Director of CGI company. But after twenty years of working on and creating other people’s visual ideas, and despite being at the top of his game, he realised that something important was missing. He quit, and the adventurous spirit that had always been part of him took him on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery to reignite his personal creative vision. On the way he found Nature to be his greatest teacher, and has undergone a number of initiations into indigenous traditions, studied meditation and Taoist arts. This shows in the way he incorporates different and often natural elements, such as feathers, bones, seeds and wood, into sculptural paintings and works representing the preciousness and sacredness of each moment. Mometo is a name given to Ben in the African spiritual tradition of Bwiti. He continues to return to Gabon when he can, learning the music and culture of this tradition. He lives in a magical Dartmoor forest, spending time in the woods every day. But despite his best efforts to live a quiet life, he can still be found dancing or DJing at parties and festivals or doing strange spiritual ceremonies, usually in a jungle somewhere far away.
