About The Artwork

UNVEILED PRESENCE (NYC) - Score of Noise- Light Box 1/5 -- LED premium light box with sound visualization on photographic slide material from sound recordings inside of the New York rooftop water tanks, part pf the Installation UNVEILED PRESENCE (NYC) -- edition of 5 +1 Artist Print Project Describtion Installation: The starting point of our project UNVEILED PRESENCE (secret sounds) is Marcel Duchamp’s work “A Bruit Secret” (“With hidden noise”) made in New York in 1916. This readymade consists of a standard ball of twine sandwiched between two brass plates. The metal plates are held together by four long bolts, which simultaneously function as supports for the object. A cavity was created between the two plates and the hollow space in the centre of the ball of thread into which Walter Arensberg, a collector and friend of Duchamp, placed a small object. Duchamp wasn’t told what the object was and the viewer only becomes aware of it when the object is tilted or shaken but its true identity remains a secret.Three lines of text are painted on each of the brass plates in French and English.Various letters have been left blank, to be filled by the observer. The lines of text are intended to be read one after the other with small arrows at the end of each line indicating which line is to be read next:The text starts with the first line of text on the upper metal plate and then moves onto the first line on the lower plate etc. This results in the object being turned over and over again and a noise being produced inside the readymade. The work is part of the Arensberg Collection in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA. The long-term project “UNVEILED PRESENCE (secret sounds)” deals with sound events that can in- directly be heard experienced. It was initiated in New York City, where Marcel Duchamp also created his work “A Bruit Secret” (1916).The installation project grows and develops with time and with each new audio recording sequences. The audio-visual installation UNVEILED PRESENCE NYC is based on sound recordings collected in 2006/2007 in New York City. The basic idea behind the installation was to realize a site-specific work. The rooftop water tanks are a distinctive feature of the NewYork skyline with an unusual characteristic sound inside. With the use of different recording techniques, such as solid-state and hydrophonics, sound recordings were simultaneously made in four selected water tanks around the Manhattan Bridge (Brooklyn). The physical differences of each sounding body consisting of water, wood and metal generated four unique multi-layered and individual soundscapes. The rooftop water tanks act as omnidirectional receptacles for sound events from the inside of the building and the surrounding area. The resulting installation reproduces the acoustic situation at the recording locations in the form of four sound objects, which also visually reference the water tanks and Marcel Duchamp’s readymade. The objects are made of mirror sheets attached horizontally to threaded rods at a height of approx. 80 cm.The flexible mirror sheets are distorted, forming an asymmetrical, bowl-like hollow in the center. A vibration exciter plate is mounted centrally to the underside of the mirror sheet and transmits elements of the sound composition to the sheet’s surface in the form of vibra- tions. In the depression on the top of the mirrored sheet is a water film, the surface of which shows resonating wave patterns. Spotlights directed onto the surface of the water bounce reflections onto a wall in the slightly darkened space where they interfere and collide with each other. Four light boxes (100x140cm) with sound visualizations (100 x 140 cm) were developed parallel to the sound objects. Consis- ting of photographic textures from the recording locations and cut-ups of waveform representations of the site-specific sound recordings, vector graphics fuse into an almost monochrome network of fine noise notations.
