About The Artwork

This iPad artwork is called 'The Mighty Mississippi’. It is based on a photograph I took from the Natchez Bluff Walking Trail, from where you get a mighty view over the mighty Mississippi. A magical place where nature and history come together. I created this work by painting digitally on the photo. My digital work is multi layered. The photo is at the bottom of this pile of layers. I pull it out from underneath, like pulling a piece of paper out from under a pile. Why? Because I don’t need it anymore. The other layers sort of melt together into a new work of art.

I have been an independent artist for over 10 years now. For me painting is a learning process in itself. I always reach a little further than I can. I'm always looking for ways to do things differently. If I keep doing that, it's never going to be a trick. I fight the force of habit in my way of working. Because I see it everywhere: habits are easily adopted in a creative process. Which then is not so creative anymore. Simple things in nature inspire me the most: a breaking wave on the beach, a wilted flower in the garden, an autumn tree in the forest. Sometimes there is an invisible third hand that paints along. Call it flow. Or inspiration. I cannot force this invisible hand to cooperate. When it happens, it always results in a painting that I am satisfied with. I have my own studio and art gallery in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from where I sold over 80 artworks through the years. I also like to exhibit at other locations.
