About The Artwork

ASSYRIAN MOTHER EARTH This collection of drawings made of littered single-use plastic bags honors the unique spirit of Assyrian women and the cherished bond they share with Mother Earth. Through these artistic pieces, we celebrate their immense strength, extraordinary diversity, and unwavering devotion to our community. History may have obscured their contributions, but these artworks serve as a luminous tribute to the Assyrian women who embody the very heart of our shared heritage. Their caring souls are deeply intertwined with the beauty of nature, safeguarding its precious splendour and preserving its diversity. Just as they nurture our community with love and compassion, let us, too, recognize the profound connection we must foster with our Earth – for it is through this care and devotion that we can preserve the invaluable wonders of our planet for Assyrian generations to come.

- Building environmental consciousness through art is what I do best - Hello! I'm Maria, a unique environmental artist fighting single-use plastic pollution across the US, Asia, and the Middle East. Drawing on my American upbringing and Assyrian roots, I've dedicated the past decade to crafting art and installations from plastic waste, shaping conscious behaviours towards how we consume plastic and how we dispose of it. With a Bachelor's degree in Art Education and a Master's in Florence, Italy, I have honed my skills to make a positive impact through art. For the past decade, my artistic journey has been focused on transforming trash into thought-provoking pieces of art, specifically addressing the issue of plastic pollution in urban and natural environments. Through my artwork, I strive to raise awareness, spark conversations, and inspire change. Drawing inspiration from my travels, I utilize discarded plastic materials to create captivating and visually compelling installations and art pieces. During my time in Europe, the Middle East, and currently Asia, I had the privilege of experimenting with sensorial installations that explore significant themes such as feminism, waste consumption, and my own cultural identity as an Assyrian, Iraqi. By combining art and environmental consciousness, I aim to foster a deeper connection between individuals and the environment, urging them to reconsider their choices and adopt more sustainable behaviors. Through my collaboration with MicroPlastics JO, an environmental organization I co-founded, and my engagement in environmental projects in Thailand and Indonesia, I am committed to using art as a catalyst for change. Thank you for joining me on this artistic adventure. Together, let's create a world where art becomes a powerful tool in shaping a sustainable future for all.
