Here I returned to black Sumi ink after a long phase of working in color - Though it is a return to the old, in a sense, it also was a new approach to the familiar black ink, in that I felt rather more free to play with how I applied it and how the figure would interact with the background. Another novelty of this piece was the inclusion of the lower part, which was intended to just be the "scratch" paper that I normally removed from the final piece. But I liked how it worked with the main drawing and decided to leave it in, which has become a regular practice for me since. This piece also marked a shift into focusing again on internal experiences, as opposed to the external experiences which had commanded much of my work in color. Upon reflection I noticed that I tend toward abstract, textural backgrounds when my inspiration for a piece comes from an internal place - from my feelings and emotions - rather than the naturalistic, often plant-centric backgrounds of pieces I make when I'm more focused on my experience as part of an environment as a whole.

It’s thrilling to discover a sprawling root system connecting thoughts that appeared to float like lily pads on the surface of a pond. Some ideas are associated by only a wispy tendril or two; others, entangled by dense dendritic ropes. Yet everything, once revealed as related, seems obviously and necessarily so. My artwork is my way of exploring these connections: the relationships between my physical and mental experiences, how they are often erroneously categorized as separate in kind, and how introspection and attention shows their unity. Through pen and ink I explore and celebrate the relationships between bodies, thoughts, things, language, music, and art. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where I went to the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. I got my BA at UT Austin in Linguistics and Philosophy, then came out west to study Developmental Psychology at USC. With an MA under my belt, I decided once again to focus on my art. One of my greatest discoveries has been that dichotomies - science & art; body & brain - are an illusion. This idea permeates my artwork, and today you can find me in LA drawing, playing tennis, tending to plants, or romping around in the great outdoors.
