About The Artwork

Black Square This series is an exercise in simplicity and minimalism, dense in context and symbolism about material mortality, life lived, change, or rather a study on the duration between one state and another through time passing. The duration spent on any one piece us equitable to its lifespan, as if it were a living thing. The material elements are basic and essential (cotton canvas, the carbon of charcoal) as indeed materials like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen are in living things, and their biological rules are set and limited. As the designated space is filled, there are practically infinite ways to reach a point of ending from the point of initiation. Along the way there are natural points for pause - moments at which the square is filled to such an extent that the composition is balanced in shape, or the shape alludes to an interesting form. Often these points come after the first mark made in a confined square, then next few marks that divide up the incomplete space and dictate how 'the fill' might proceed from there.. and usually some point in the middle where light and dark areas are more or less in balance. This is likenable to a life lived: The first formative moments being significant to how the life is lived, and the point at which the first act ends and the second begins. The closure of a piece sometimes comes once the square is entirely filled, but not always. Each piece is born, lives in its being filled and dies when my intervention ends.. what remains is the afterlife of the creative process of decision-making and intervention. Rest in peace, art piece.

I make Artworks that are, at their core, about mortality. Even before I reached the age of 10 I'd lie awake at night and interrogate the idea of afterlife. I'd try to see from the impossible perspective of watching myself experience nothingness beyond the point of departure, and that attempt at taking an impossible perspective has chased me throughout my artistic career - such as it is. Art is a method of decyphering one's own Life, but Life is too complex a code to rely on one manner of Art-making exclusively as your strategy. Let's say, "The key to one's existence has a form," and Art seeks to offer a view inwards. One must take multiple viewpoints inward facing to understand that form as anything but a shape.
