About The Artwork

Hippocrates (460 – c. 370 BC), was a Greek physician of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is traditionally referred to as the "Father of Medicine" in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field, such as the use of prognosis and clinical observation, the systematic categorization of diseases, or the formulation of humoral theory. Hippocrates founded Medical science by supporting the scientific edifice on three axes. 1. He established physical examination, inspection, palpation, percussion and listening as the main examination methods by analyzing the findings and classifying the results into nosological entities. 2. He advanced medical thinking to a prognostic level, freed it from superstitions and sacred punishments, took the gods and demons out of medicine and introduced healthy diet, hygiene and even clean environment into the therapeutic equation. 3. revolutionized medicine and established nosology, surgery, orthopedics and many other specialties as parts of medicine and as invasive therapeutic solutions. Most importantly, he established medical education as a multi-year apprenticeship and as a combination of art and science in the relief of human suffering. And finally he gave us an advanced for the time moral code, describing the values of medical science. Ηere we present Hippocrates in the philosophical tunic of the Greco-Roman classical world, holding his Hippocratic oath and having next to him the main books of Medical science with the titles he established (except for anatomy which was established later).
