Line, Tone, Value No. 7 Drawing

As the title indicates, this drawing was the seventh in a series. In this series, I was exploring the relationships between line, tone, and value. After seeing a show of Michelangelo's drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and several of Prud'hon's drawings at the Morgan Library and Museum, I was fascinated with these artists' seamless integration of line and tone to create structure, and I sought to do so myself. For each drawing in this series, I would first draw a finished figure in charcoal or conte, then I would wipe the drawing with a chamois cloth. After this, I would resuscitate the figure by cross hatching it back in with pen and ink using either a calligraphy brush or a reed pen -- in this case, I used the calligraphy brush. Finally, I would bring the highlights to the surface by gently applying white gouache. This figure later became the basis for "Paradise Lost, Book I: Satan Stands to Address His Legions."
