Raphael’s Studies after Michelangelo’s David (1507-8) David, had just been placed outside the Palazzo Vecchio and it is thought that Raphael may have had the chance to view it from the rear side prior to its final placement. Regardless, some wonder why Raphael in the closest extant drawing after the Michelangelos sculpture copied it from the rear. Here I present a detailed anatomical version of Raphael's drawing. In my opinion, Raphael preferred a design of the back of the statue, perhaps because he saw a smaller relief depiction of Michelangelo. This could have been an opportunity for him to highlight what the teacher had left relatively superficial.M Moreover, he changed the angle of the drawing, restoring the plane to our eyes. Technically, the anatomical deepening, the change of scale but also the angle/level of the statue and the transfer to the drawing, constitute a new work of art. And this was exactly Raphael's pursuit. To recreate a masterpiece.
