James Shipton is a contemporary British figurative artist working primarily in charcoal and oil.
His work explores the human form through expressive mark-making, movement and contrast, often balancing strength with vulnerability and definition with abstraction. Rather than simply depicting the figure, Shipton uses it to explore intimacy, emotion and psychological presence.
His distinctive charcoal drawings retain the raw energy of their creation, with bold lines, erased passages and exposed marks becoming an integral part of the finished work.
Shipton’s artwork is held in private collections internationally and has also been supplied for major film productions.
