A gestural nude drawing captures the essence of a pose and the figure's movement with quick, energetic, and expressive lines. The focus is on the action, rhythm, and flow of the human form, rather than on perfect anatomical detail or realistic rendering.

Hugh Dewitte

About the Artist

Hugh Dewitte

United States

Hugh DeWitte 's drawings and paintings employ long, expressive strokes and primal mark-making to explore the energy and rhythm of what he terms "scapes." Working across diverse series—from urban grids and highways to industrial rail lines and wide landscapes— Hugh relies on a spontaneous, improvisational style.

Flowing lines echo the sweeping curves of modern highways and divided terrain, creating a documentary atmosphere charged with curiosity rather than literal realism. Instead of acting as a visual journalist, he investigates how structures and patterns convey movement, compulsion, and the quiet hum of modern life with all its achievements and struggles.

In his Trainscapes, Hugh explores the intersection between physical transit and internal contemplation. Viewed from a bird's-eye perspective, industrial rail yards transform into rhythmic geometric tapestries integrated with vintage tickets, manifests, and transit routes.

Meanwhile, his landscapes and cityscapes invite viewers into the myriad lives that have traversed the land, incorporating historical land deeds, handwritten letters, and ledger lists to reveal terrain marked by human division and memory.

This dialogue between humanity and geography extends into his assemblages, which transform antique farming, blacksmithing, and land surveying tools into contemporary totems.

Together, these elements chronicle our fleeting presence against the land’s enduring essence—a reminder that as the sun rises and sets, we become part of an eternal cycle etched into the earth.
