The Dancing Drawing

While I had a studio on the lower east side of Manhattan in 2003, I hired models on a weekly basis (and invited other artists to come and draw with me) I was inspired so much by the models themselves. Good models give so much during their poses. It is as if they take on a character, inhabit it, and wordlessly communicate a story. The model held several long poses and the drawing is made up of many shorter, gestural drawings created during the longer poses, in different colors, on the page. There are also different emphases in the lines, quick decisions made intuitively....no thinking, just moving the hand. This drawing is done with colored pencils on black paper as a way to go beyond the more conventional pencil on paper. Using the different colors was a way to express movement and the element of time during a more static posture. It caused me to leave behind assumptions about what I thought I knew about the figure and to "find" the form of the body in a fresh and new way. I enjoy drawing nudes, especially on a small scale, as it creates an intimacy with the subject for myself and it draws in the viewer for an intimate experience with the subject and the artwork itself.
