Original red chalk drawing (very nicely framed). Sanguine or red chalk is chalk of a reddish-brown colour, so called because it resembles the colour of dried blood. It has been popular for centuries for drawing (where white chalk only works on coloured paper). The word comes via French from the Italian sanguigna and originally from the Latin “sanguis”. Many of the old masters used red chalk but it seems go have been rarely used of late. I have been using it for about 10 years and love the effect and colour. I love the emotion in this pose and have tried to simplify it down to its very essence - less is more. If I'd filled it all in, the lower, less-important parts would compete with the focal point (largely the facial expression, and mood conveyed through the entwined pose). The eye is drawn to the face, and the brain (having been given enough clues) fills in the rest.

Overview As you can see I specialise in capturing the female form - subtle, classical nudes in oil, charcoal, graphite and red chalk. Born in Henley, I spent most of my adult life in London, Hong Kong and Dublin. I am now happily settled in Windsor. I abandoned a career in publishing at the age of 40 to follow my lifelong passion - drawing and painting. I trained at a leading art college in London and was then taught by Michael Clark, who knew Francis Bacon very well (and incidentally the only person to draw him in the flesh). My work has been included in the books ‘Images of Women in Art’ and ‘Musings of Miss Yellow’. As well as being a stay-at-home Dad, I now paint from my Windsor studio and run my own life-drawing classes at the Windsor Art Centre. Testimonial “Patrick Palmer is a modern master of figurative art. His post-romantic nudes are not only exquisitely painted, but also dreamy, delicate and suggestive. They only hint at sensuality and evoke fantasy in the subtle and elegant manner that distinguishes art from pornography.” Claudia Moscovici, Co-founder of postromanticism.com and art critic (“Romanticism and Post-romanticism”, Lexington Books, 2007).
