"Oldey Timey: WorkHorse", 2014, 11" x 14", Ink and Coffee on Paper Growing up in the shadow of Detroit in the 80's i KNEW, without any shadow of a doubt, that Unions were and are, necessary. Many of my friends' families were proud UAW workers, in fact, my Aunt worked the line at Ford (which she called Ford's) for years. I heartily believe that unions are necessary for worker's rights and continued ethical working conditions. Unfortunately, as with anything controlled by people, they can easily be corrupted beyond their initial good intentions. But just because something is corrupted, it does not mean you give up on it. The core of this piece is from an old Union Propaganda poster of a welder. Inspired by the character of "Boxer" from George Orwell's "Animal Farm", this Union Welder is a serious WorkHorse, a dedicated worker for himself and his station, and proud of his position. On a side note, I have no idea as to how the flipped-up welder's mask would actually fit over his long face...
