The Road to Addis Drawing

I sketched out the plan for this drawing whilst travelling along the dusty road from the Lower Omo Valley in Ethiopia, up to the capital city, Addis Ababa in the summer of 2016. I was inspired by the female figure standing still in the road- which is quite a dangerous thing to do- especially as all around her was hustle and bustle. There was a lot of noise coming up from the shops and the vehicles in the street around, but she created an island of calm just for a moment. I hope that when you look at this piece you will take note of the stillness first of all, before your eye is drawn to the activity in the other areas of the drawing. I chose to use charcoal on newspaper because I think it reflects the kind of materials that would be available to me if I lived in a village in Ethiopia. The fine quality of the paper helps to add a historical reference, I think, as if the image has been torn out of the past.
