About The Artwork

This field of Punk Flowers is an original printed and signed on archival Hahnemühle William Turner 310g paper. It pays a tribute to the expressionist beauty that burns in the heart of the punks. Painting with random numbers is an iterative process. It is somewhat akin to planting seeds, watch them grow as the script draws lines of colors in the image. For long hours, I spend time tweaking the parameters that generate the numbers. In this example the numbers are used to determine if a line is magenta, black or yellow on the yellow canvas. Then they are used to pick at which coordinates of the grid the line is drawn and at which angle. Finally, the numbers are crunched to tell if a line is thin and short or wide and long. When I feel there is enough flowers, I stop the process. This experiment was quite stunning because—it the same way dna will make some plants weak and small—the program kept adding petals small petals to the weak the punk flowers and bigger ones to the strongest ones. Is it some form of virtual destiny?

Thibaut researches how to control random feeds of numbers to create meaningful abstract compositions. With the Atelier Aléatoire, he adds a new dimension to this body of work: introducing an interactive questionnaire to compose soul portraits of collectors and passer-by, at a specific moment, imprinting in it the very mood of its epoch. For the Paris Book Fair (Livre Paris) in 2017 he presented an installation with a large format printer where he invited 80 visitors to draw their portraits. In Bangkok (2011,2015) he explored materials like fabric, glass, wood, and metal for his prints and light sculptures. He created a labyrinth of lights for Architect 2013 and the “ Ambulatory of the 5 Eléments” in a lounge designed by Christian Lacroix. A retrospective of his research was held at RCAC. He was a resident artist and lecturer at the Chulalongkorn University. Thibaut now lives in Prague.
