Devotion Artwork

Sometimes amazing things happen when we just let ourselves play. This piece came from some artist "playtime" I had given myself. I had no intention of creating a piece of art, I was just letting myself experiment. It started with a cardboard box I was using to ship some art to someone. The box was huge and just looked so bleak. I wanted the package to be exciting to look at as it traveled across the country. I knew the recipient had a yorkie so I quickly painted the dog on the box, but it felt alone, so I added an owner. The box still felt kind of ho hum to me and I wanted to play more so I added some scrap paper to make a dress, then added some more to the dog. In the end it was so different and simple I fell in love. I took a picture and sent the box on it's way. For a year and a half I have been looking at that picture wishing I had framed that piece, that represented my playtime. Finally I loaded the picture onto my iPad and kept playing with it, adding digital watercolor layers and playing with the background. I gave the dog more distinguishable features and added more depth to the piece. Now I have "Devotion." In this piece the dog represents me, the artist, feeling the devotion for my calling, which is to create.
