About The Artwork

Interactive collage on aluminum with augmented reality (AR) layer selfie stream, 2015 We are the astronaut. Our spacesuits, devices, services, technology. This series uses a free smartphone app (eKo Art). When viewed through the phone, the work reveals hidden content. The AR layer in this series is an endless mirror selfie stream pulled from the web. Viewers become performers as they hold up their phones and reflect the images. When the screen is touched a celebrity selfie appears and the astro gets a bit of “Star Power” The astronaut is a bittersweet figure; for most of history human beings have gone outwards, searching for answers. Now we go inwards instead. We are all connected but separate, searching the void, increasingly dependent on technology to lead us through the darkness. The Astronauts in this series brandish social media logos and practice mudras (sacred hand gestures), mirroring our attempts at connecting with something bigger than ourselves. The spacesuit keeps us safe, in control, in communication with fellow travelers. What would happen if we chose to attempt to touch the universe directly, remove it from our lives?

Erin Ko tells stories through a mix of traditional art making methods with new technologies; often to address our complicated love/hate relationship with technology. Classically trained in fine arts with 20+ years of experience as a game and app developer, her practice builds on hybrid approaches to art; sculpture, video, sound, with reality-expanding technologies viewers can opt in or out of. The result is an ongoing mashup of street art, mixed reality, totems, paintings, NFTs, performances, wearables, and other collaborative works. Some of Ko’s favorite themes to explore are layered realities, mediated realities, techno-socio isolation, digital privilege, and transcendence through technology. . Erin has collaborated with many creators and organizations, including MoMAR, Third Rail Art, Radiance VR, The Gene Frankel Theatre, CADAF, JCMAP, Every Woman Biennial, and Recess. She is a member of Crema Colletiva, Lumen Prize, and MoMA’s R&D Salons. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in London, Mexico City, Tulum, Beijing, New York, and Berlin. More commercial include time spent at Looking Glass Studios, Razorfish, and Blue Fang Games. She is the co-founder of Hutong Games, which aims to democratize game development through visual scripting tools. In 2018, Ko helped to create and produce the Akumal Arts Festival, an annual week long celebration of community and art making in the pueblo of Akumal, Tulum Mexico. Her current passion project is an immersive, XR rock opera, called "Sick Mystic 9 Saves the World from Monsters" www.erinkostudios.com
