About The Artwork

I Michelle Vara, the artist, enjoy watching and feeding birds of prey on our farm in Upstate New York. The inspiration for this painting was- in the fall of the year an owl came and graced our presence, allowing us to interact with s/he for over two weeks every day. My family and friends would watch and talk to this owl from about 8 feet away as we enjoyed our outdoor porch, the bird was not afraid nor bothered by us. This was a very moving experience allowing me to create a series of paintings in which I use bitumen otherwise known as road tar. The tar is my custom created a recipe so that it dries nontoxic to be used as paint for the implications and metaphors towards being mindful and aware of the fragility of nature. Michelle Vara Artist Statement “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency & vibration.” - Nikola Tesla My work is interested in the politics of the universal consciousness and tethered to the lineage of the Abstract Expressionists; it engages with Jungian ideals that there is a shared consciousness tapped into and revealed through the viewers' engagement with abstracted color and form. My work is not bound in one medium or style, but joins multiple platforms of material, and processes that I believe necessary for subject engagement. The use of recycled material makes oblique references to karmic notions of rebirth and regeneration along a continuum of time. “Images that are true symbols … are the best possible expressions for something unknown…” – CG Jung
