About The Artwork
This piece (and this series) are an homage to the 20th century Italian artist Alberto Burri who had a powerful career spanning retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York in 2016. His story of discovering art as a career in the aftermath of WWII is inspiring and I was completely taken by his work and choice of media. In this work I am exploring the juxtaposition of combining new, raw industrial materials (wood, oil and steel) with their down-cycle or waste products (wood ash, tar and rust) as a way of displaying the possibilities of a cradle to grave philosophy towards use and re-use of everyday industrial materials.
