ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Selection From Tapering Perspectives Solo Exhibition Rushing River Rock Edd Baptista began his exploration of the landscape painting by wondering what would happen if he took away one of the four corners of the traditional painting. How the landscape would look and how it feel if he tapered the perspective. He selected the triangular shape with a two-dimensional plane for this series and it’s relationship to perspective. Vanishing points and horizons and the triangulation of sight: how would a section of landscape look in a triangular space? That was the question at the root of this project. The forced perspective combined with the vanishing perspective of a horizon has led to surprising experience in landscape art. The paintings make you see and feel the landscape differently. By starting each piece with acrylic brushwork to create depth and space Edd then sands and repaints the custom-made panels using meticulous process of layering stencils and aerosol paints, the most urban of all mediums. The result is a surprising freedom from the conventional. The artist works from photographs taken on his travels along the eastern shore of the St. Lawrence, through Northern Ontario, PEI and Manitoba. But then there are also paintings of High Park in Toronto, near where he lives. The natural landscape in the city is another of the complexities he explores. In the wilds he painted signs of man. There are roads and bridges, lighthouses and fields, telephone poles and fences. In the city there are forests and parks. Further combing the traditional Canadian landscape with new perspective and urban techniques.
