About The Artwork
Magic Carpet Series This is the Amsterdam Magic Carpet. I called it that because I painted it just before chaperoning four teenage boys of 17 on a visit for a week to Amsterdam, where, as their sober governess, I had to for economy's sake, share a room with them at the top of the narrowest and steepest flight of stairs I have ever been up.We were all in bunk beds. They threw socks around a lot and rode around all day on bicycles. We met once a day for a meal in the evening. The rest of the time I wandered around, and couldn't afford to visit any of the museums. Got as far as the entrance to Rembrandt's house, but decided to buy a pair of turkish trousers from a stall outside, instead of paying for the entrance ticket... from the air the layout of Amsterdam is not disimilar to this painting which curiously looks like a map of some sort. The Magic Carpets are all about transformation and change...moving forwards...transition...and a hope for a better future for mankind.
