About The Artwork

This is amongst my most recent work, it is also one of my favourite pieces. It combines all of the knowledge and painting techniques I have developed and acquired over the last 20 years, culminating in an abstract expressionist piece with reasonably deep attachments to symbolism I have deciphered in the process and progress of my life and artistic development. The connection to the dark and intrinsically unstable elements of life as an artist, the sacrifices made to chase personal endeavour, perhaps above any normal attempt to fit in with ordinary society and family life. I manifest this concept by referring to the Devil or Satan, yet disguise the darker elements to its creation with bright colours and, as always, include shades of each colour in the Electromagnetic Light Spectrum, or the rainbow as one might surmise. This acts in a euphemistic role, a circumlocution that blends in the fact that darker and more dangerous elements of chasing personal success, personal expression, artistic inspiration and a somewhat egotistical and inherently selfish pursuit in life. The biblical quotation "Beware false prophets, wolves in sheep's clothing", (in the King James Bible this text reads: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.") is loosely relevant to to this concept, as is "Every cloud has a silver lining." Both become pertinently aphorismatic, perhaps the apotheosis of a silver lining itself, guidance in life that I draw from the painting that turns 'bad into good' in the most simple terminology. The painting also refers to an interest, maybe rather an acute fascination with the occult, that which is horrific, that which is innately created to scare. However, true to the nature of most of my work I dress it in the antinomic, the paradoxical. I have always had a connection to the reality in life of consistently transforming ordinarily negative themes into positive outcomes. This one you see here... Interestingly, I have painted this on wood as opposed to canvas or canvas board. The surface was built up over a period of years, the board treated as something of a shield and studio prop through much of its existence. It results in a naturally weathered and then built upon surface, a surface created by my natural processes and painting techniques, until the surface was ready to paint upon with my final artwork and themes. Such a process that mirrors natural wear and tear in life, natural degradation that occurs incessantly in all of life, is impossible to manufacture in this true to life manner and ultimately, is in keeping with the aforementioned theory behind this painting.
