‘Autumn Zen 1 and 2’ are acrylic paintings on gesso cotton canvas and wood stretcher bars, completed from 2005 – 2007.

On a rich bronze, red, and green stencil textured floral background, a round window looks out onto an autumn-winter landscape caught at the moment of an incandescent pink and blue sunset. If you look carefully, you’ll see the composition of stylized trees, snow, hills, and streams creates a Yin Yang symbol.

I love acrylics because they can mimic so many other painterly looks: in this case, the rich textures and colors of Venetian fresco. To achieve this background look I’ve flooded metallic bronze washes over marble-dust-infused acrylic gels, layered on by brayer, palette knife, or hand-cut floral stencils. The raised details inside the landscape window are thickened acrylic tinted with iridescent gold powder.

The whole look was inspired by Asian mother-of-pearl marquetry inlay and landscape screens.

I want my viewers to feel like they're breathing deep bright, cold sunset air scented with autumn leaves and smoke.

I’m offering these pieces as both a cropped print version and the full 36x24” version ready to hang. The stretched originals have hanging hardware and wires on the back.

I create art under the name Marian Crane (go ahead, I'm immune to the inevitable jokes because I adore Hitchcock movies.) I write and blog under the names Crane Hana, M. Crane Hana, and M. C. Hana (but they're all me, really.) I was born in northwestern New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by the spectacular landscapes, colors, and cultural blends of the American Southwest. My mixed-media paintings, fiber collages, wearable art, jewelry, and book art sculptures are inspired by my love of history, science, folk art, myth, and invention. I am fascinated with the human tendency to mix ornament and function. Since I’m a theatrical prop and artifact geek, too, I love making objects that appear as if they came out of a ‘real’ fantasy or science-fiction culture.
