Utilising a process of distillation through photographs and pencil studies, Kate Murdoch looks for the essence in her subjects. From the purity of natural forms to more mundane images of suburban confinement, she allows her abstractions to find an emotion beyond visual representation. Her current work focuses on cloudscapes and landscapes. Kate works from a series of studies of bushland and sky, exploring the spiritual balance found in nature and its opposite - our disconnection from it. Landscape can be enveloping and calming, but increasingly, as humans try to dominate nature rather than respect its rhythms, natural disasters are increasing.
