About The Artwork

I like figures "in between". Figures who leave an open range to interpratation, like in this case, as this "bather" could live a moment of relax or feel astonished, lost. In the picture you probably miss the difference of the surface between the glossy "water" area and the matt rest... Curiosity: I have made the body underwater sanding the metal. The painting is oil and oxidation (rust) on steel plates which I always personally weld. The oxidation process is the first one I make on the plate with water and salt and some other natural element, adding papers or other materials as a medium to help the water rusting the surface following possibly some shapes I wish to obtain. The rust outlines more or less the areas which will be painted later with oil colours. The particular part of this process is that oxidation has an uncertain path, so although the final step is various shifts of varnish (and wax in certain areas) to protect the painting, the development of the rust can not be prevented, this means the rusted parts will be probably still changing at least in the first one or two years from its completion. It's as if the painting had its own life after my creation, as in human life, and has the freedom to choose how to develop or change (a bit). The Steel plate is 0,5 mm thick and is mounted on a 5 cm aluminium structure on the back, partly hidden so that the painting seems kind of suspended 5 cm from the wall...

Sabatino Cersosimo was born in Turin in 1974. He studied advertising design and then received a Degree in Painting and Decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin in 1999. Since 2011 he lives and works in Berlin. Following a line that has its roots in a certain expressionist painting (especially the Viennese Secession) but evolves through the modern mediterranean and english realism, he uses basically two surfaces: metal and wood. Since he mainly paints with oil and oxidation on steel plates, the concepts of time, will and chance have been crucial to the development of his research. Art is historically considered eternal, but Cersosimo's paintings underscore art’s metamorphic nature. Here, we witness artwork as it is developing, shifting, and in some cases, mutating into other forms, much like the elements of nature on the planet. Cersosimo's paintings mirror constellations of humanity in tiny particles. In doing so, they feature many of the commonalities shared among human beings across culture, language, gender, and race.
