About The Artwork

මුල්ලේරියාවේ සටන (Mulleriyawa Satana in 1559) was a battle part of the Sinhalese–Portuguese War. It was one of the most decisive battles in Sri Lankan history and is considered the worst defeat of the Portuguese during that period. According to local chronicles, the marshlands of Mulleriyawa turned red with blood after the annihilation of the Portuguese. With this victory, Sitawaka emerged as a military power which able to challenge the Portuguese expansion. The painting brings out the symbolic art of the battles of Muleriyawa in 1559. Most of the paintings explore Buddhist philosophy and archaeological contexts. The artist uses his practice to strengthen his spiritual consciousness. In addition, Gayan's artistic practice is also influenced by abstractionism. He favors the medium of acrylic on canvas in the creation of his conceptually based pieces.
