About The Artwork

The abstract acrylic painting, Birth, (2019) is inspired by an automatic drawing I drew with ballpoint pen on paper a few years ago. An automatic drawing occurs when the artist is in a very relaxed state of mind which allows an image to appear spontaneously without intentional direction. Over the years, I have found repeating motifs and themes in my automatic drawings that I develop into paintings. Often wing shapes appear with embryo-like spirals which I interpret as existential themes intertwined with spiritual themes This particular painting and the three others in this collection are unique in that an embryonic spiral form is not present with the ancestral wing shapes so often present in my automatic drawings. Also, the contour lines of colour within the shapes is a divergence from my usual flat, hard edge style often with lyrical black outlines .In "Birth", an ancestor wing shape is just emerging to join the other more mature ancestor shapes. I also hope the viewer of my work finds a poetical feel in the paintings as well as an urge to contemplate the specialness of life or even contemplate on the possibility of other forms of existence.

Holly Winters is primarily a painter of acrylics and oil on canvas, although she produces digital images as well. Her work is often a minimalist style, but she does paint in a representational style as well. "I paint in a minimalist style, yet I think it works in that the forms in the image are not overwhelmed, but rather allowed to breathe. The simple forms that evolve from the original spontaneous continuous-line drawings I use as templates for my paintings are symbolic, often recurring motifs that evoke meaning for me. They are forms from my unconscious mind which give rise to conscious ponderings on the preciousness of all life whether that be physical manifestations or immaterial ones as hinted at through my titles." She is also open to painting commissions.
