ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Black Flood For many years I would go back to my Dad’s South Dakota farm in the Spring to help with planting. In 2008 we worked long, hard days hoping to get the crop in before the coming of predicted thunder storms. We were able to get the crop in and enjoy a feeling of accomplishment, a feeling that lasted for about six hours before the rain came. It came in sheets, a downpour, a deluge. Water ran in the furrows, and the ditches, crossed country roads. The crop was ruined, our hard work was for nothing. When hard rains come the soil turns black, the trunks of trees reflect no light. There is a heaviness that is inescapable, but the sun inevitably breaks through reflecting off the water collected in the grids created by the season’s field work. Beautiful patterns amid a minor tragedy and disappointment.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
