VIEW IN MY ROOM
Piece from ongoing "Song of the South" series. This body of work uses characters from the "Tales of Uncle Remus" to explore issues related to racism, poverty, addiction, religion, lust, greed, abuse, and other potentially traumatic universal social themes from a Southern perspective. Here, Brother Possum takes form of propaganda. In the South, religion has a strange presence - for good or bad - that seems to penetrate every corner. I see many traditions as beautiful, and much of the original message as one of solid importance (and beauty), but the message has been muddled by greed, desire for control, and so much more. The traditional idea of the devil is presented as a messenger of fear, painted in acrylic and tar.
