I heard this quote 'Business must have certainty' on the radio and it stuck in my head, and later when I was reading about the loss of habitat that has lead to the extinction of the hooded vulture, I referred back to the phrase as a title for this painting. Big business seems always to be allowed by governments to destroy habitat, so long as there is profit in the end. The lovely photograph I used as reference, so delicate and ephemeral came first and I found a piece of old floorboard in Penzance as a support. A marker pen sketch was made and then I started painting. It was late at night and after a few hours I stopped and sat back, coming to the conclusion that I was finished, somehow the incompleteness of the painting reflected the plight of the bird. The rather grand frame was a re-use from another painting that didn't sell and was a departure from my usual style. So many happy accidents lead to the making of this painting, which I hope reminds us that we all have a responsibility to animals to protect their habitats. This painting is framed in a glassless 'box' frame of found materials. This painting has been entered into the Lynn Painter Stainers Prize 2018. Please note that this painting is currently entered into the British Contemporary Painting Prize and so is unavailable for sale until November.
