This painting marks the second in a series of European seascapes that I’ve done. They are a bit of a departure from my normal “cityscape” vibe, but the they present a fun new challenge and direction. I suppose in a way this paintings represents a journey towards "discovering my roots." Being of Italian/Croatian ancestry, the creation of a work like "Cinque Terre" allows me to take a mental departure from my home studio in CA, to the cobble-stoned streets of this ancient Italian city. Whenever I put paint or paper to canvas, I could hear the sound of the waves, and feel the call of my ancestors boiling in my blood. I used acrylic paint with a brush and palette knife throughout the work. While the hard-edge of the palette knife offers a very "defined" edge to create the hard lines of the buildings with; I also use the knife it to add detailed color bursts in the sky. As far as the pallets is concerned, I wanted to have a fresh, bright feeling emanating from the canvas. Hence, I favored a vibrant turquoise, sunset hues of yellow and gold, and silver accents to add depth. I used liquid enamel paints for the “Pollock” dripping effect around the dock and city. I feel like this effect- in moderation- gives the painting a sense of movement and energy. In order to give the viewer a sense of the sky "shimmering" through the clouds, I used a mixture of metallic paints and papers. These materials offer the viewer a glimmering reflection that will give off different light patterns depending on the angle you take the painting in from. My goal with "Cinque Terre" was to give the viewer a painting that draws the eye in, and reveals more and more depth in it's layers as it's studied over time. While its color palette and ethos offer a certain cheerful energy when viewed from afar, it's my hope that the viewer is beckoned in closer to discover new stories and connections in the details of the painting over time. This painting has been a joy to create, and I hope that same joy will be transferred over to you, and your family when you bring it into your life.
