About The Artwork

Coochie Drama -From Coochie Series “Coochie” (italiano "Cocchina") is commonly used to call out something cute and cuddly or it can name the intimate part of a woman. These characters were born from a body of music I created. They arrived as portraits of companions and life experiences I’ve known. When searching the term on the internet I discovered “coochie” used overwhelmingly in the context of pornography. Using a play on words I then decided to reclaim the term as it ironically inspired me to express different sentiments and complexities of the feminine experience as I know it. This piece is about the taboos we have about women and sex, about sexual freedom. It's about the woman being labelled as a "whore", a "slut" when acting out her freedom. It's about the ambiguity between right and wrong, love and sex, freedom and slave to our culture and social idioms. I want the viewer to see the confusion and inequality of these issues still happening today. I use the image of the prostitute to emphasize this, even though today the modern woman is mostly educated and works outside her home, she still must conduct herself "ladylike" and "appropriately". I use aggessive brustrokes to emphasize confusion and glitter to emphasize glamour and social trends. Pink is used to help the viewer feel the delicateness of being a woman. The wings are used to give her freedom as she puts them on. she chooses.
