About The Artwork

I approach my painting and drawing from specific touchpoints. In the 19th century the development of photography released painting from the restraints of formal representation. The arrival of Cubism provided painters with a jumping off point into modernism, and also pointed toward radically different ways of representation. Today, a quantum leap that has occurred in the way we observe our immediate environment and indeed, the universe, demands a similarly radical release from formal representation. Digital technology has revolutionised our concept of ‘seeing’. Geophysics, imaging in the ultra–violet and infra-red spectrums, GPR, space telescopes; these modern technologies allow us to look through solid surfaces, and back in time. The two-dimensional equivalent of these technologies is the humble map. A map can be viewed from any angle. Maps are inherently ‘landscapes’. Routes shown represent both distance and time. When I came to Australia, I became aware that Indigenous art embraces the same qualities of the map, and by default, those contemporary ways of seeing. Incorporating the passage of time, specific stories, landscape features, cultural information, history and mythology and so forth into a single two-dimensional image. My own approach to image making is inspired by all these things. My artworks are in essence landscapes, both the external and internal kind, with multiple points of view. They are inspired by my experiences of the world around me. I build layers of canvas and colour to suggest that there is stuff beneath the surface of the image. It is a specific approach to form that I have adapted from the lessons of Cubism. Colour is applied in thin layers to achieve a rough texture, which I value for its transparency and earthiness. I consider myself a colourist, and it is colour that I enjoy most of all for its evocative qualities, and colour that drives the picture’s evolution.
