About The Artwork
This was inspired by a programme I watched about Birds of Paradise and images of Victorian women dressed in beautiful outfits. I was interested in the parallels between humans and nature and how women can use dressing up to be pleasing on the eye to attract a mate as do BOP. I also take a lot of walks in the forest which came through. The blue and red colours to the right were inspired by a Moroccan style painted bed head I saw in a film.

Using a mix of my imagination, life drawings and photographic references, I often borrow elements from history and folklore to explore what it means to be a woman in the 21st Century. The women I paint are at ease with themselves and not generally paying attention to the viewer. I want my women to be challenging to look at, confrontational even, which is why I often paint them face on and close up, producing a feeling of intensity. Their postures and often direct gaze are important expressions of their sense of self. I make a feature of their eyes to draw in the viewer. These figures are powerful yet feminine.
