I am fascinated by physics, the quantum world and astrophysics and in an effort to visualize and to better understand the processes that underpin the natural world. I titled the work Deposition. In science, this word is used to describe a change of state from a gas to a solid without passing through a liquid state. The body seems solid, yet bouyant as a gas - I wanted to underscore that this scene is a suspended moment with the potential to be in several conditions all at once. At the same time, it is worth knowing that this and its accompanying body of work came about during 2020 when i was furloughed by my employer. I had time to focus inward and this body pose/aesthetic/process and outcome was the result of that. I painted this figure pose a few times, in a few visual textures and found that the way i painted it became a sort of barometer for how I was feeling at the time. I am an intuitive, introspective artist - The subject of the image is within my control, but the presence it carries around with it - the sense of feeling that seeps into the artwork throughout the process of making - is not. I hope the viewer will see something of themselves in this artwork, or find pause in it to reflect on potential; of self, of a moment, of the finer world in and around them. There is no face visible, just the sense of a body either rising or falling... or suspended. Black can be a heavy or negative value for some, or a void can be awesome, expansive and filled with potential for others. I had been using 3D modelling software to create objects, sets, and scenes as an extension on my drawing practice. The reference image for this work was created that way, so I was able to accurately reference light sources and proportions in an object that would have otherwise been challenging to set up and paint from observation.

I make Artworks that are, at their core, about mortality. Even before I reached the age of 10 I'd lie awake at night and interrogate the idea of afterlife. I'd try to see from the impossible perspective of watching myself experience nothingness beyond the point of departure, and that attempt at taking an impossible perspective has chased me throughout my artistic career - such as it is. Art is a method of decyphering one's own Life, but Life is too complex a code to rely on one manner of Art-making exclusively as your strategy. Let's say, "The key to one's existence has a form," and Art seeks to offer a view inwards. One must take multiple viewpoints inward facing to understand that form as anything but a shape.
