The statue which is portrayed in this painting inspired me greatly. It is a very archaic staue. The form is very rudimentary. It looks like a statue from a time long ago. This statue is actually made in 1975 by the Groninger Sculptor Gjalt Blaauw. He made only one figurative sculpture and this is the one. In his own words 'I wanted to see if I could also do this, and after I thought I could my curiosity was satisfied, and I could move on.' I think this statue asks to have his diner served. The plate with pasta and the wine gives the staue a funny and somewhat alienated feeling. The statue 'Mannetje' is placed on top of a hill in the Noorderplantsoen in Groningen. It is in my opinion a very psychedelic painting. The lights through the trees are illuminating and give weird forms on the ground. It is a very beautiful spot in the Noorderplantsoen. The slyle is impressionism. To me it also feels like there is a deep soul in the statue that shines through in the painting. For me it is also a complicated image. Everybody feels something different while watching it I think. The sides of the painting are also painted and it is signed at the back.

Netherlands
I live in Groningen a town in the north of The Netherlands. I get my inspiration from the living nature, people and the world around me. I love especially the variety and complexity of everyting and everyone who lives in the here (where ever that might be) and the now. I work with oilpaint on canvas because oil gives the best colors. Also oil has the capacity to hold the emotions and the atmospere into the paint. So that if you look at the painting for a longer time it really comes to life. I like to paint directly 'en plein air'. For me color is the most important. Before form there is color.
