The source photograph for this painting is from a 60s wildlife book and instantly I knew I had to make a portrait of this chimp. She exudes so much character and wisdom there is no other way to react other than to acknowledge the humanity in those eyes. I adopted a slightly abstracted approach letting it be unfinished, which it benefits from. Oftentimes I have to try taking a drawing to a support a few times before it is right, but this one worked first time.

Echoing the ancient tradition of paintings rolé to confer high status on the sitter, usually a rich land owner or royalty, now it is the turn of animals.

Tim won the Ovalhouse prize at Chelsea College of Art, and Gloucester University prize at the Open West in 2015. He is a member of the committee of the Newlyn Society of Artists. Has exhibited in Berlin and Baku Zdonov in the Czech Republic and is represented by Daisy Laing, Penzance, Avalon in Marazion and Jupiter Newlyn.
