Inspired by my personal travels this is a new painting within my Demoiselle Mondiale collection. After finishing (and selling) The Geisha painting it didn’t take me long to start on this next lady in line; The Dutch Girl. It is also made for an exhibition in my hometown where it is a response to a specific question; to react as an artist to a tree that is still standing in the garden of the house of the uncle of painter Vincent Van Gogh.

Dutch Girl.
On the French terrace is a busty young woman, languid and relaxed in the pleasant sun. Her wheat-yellow hair waves like a cornfield through which a gentle breeze flows. With her red, full mouth she sips the pale green absinthe, diluted with the clear water from the elegant carafe.
She is a Muse. At the moments when life is given a chance to take a break, she whispers inspiring sentences into the poet's ear and her soft words conjure colorful images in the painter's eyes.
Today she wears her sky blue summer dress, on which a red tree stands out as a silhouette against the clear sky.
The tree is a memory of two brothers, who once planted a tree together in the garden of their uncle Cent, the art dealer with a villa in the township Princenhage. She kissed the redhead at that moment with a soft breath; he picked up his brushes and created a new view of the world.
The Muse bends over several times in time to touch artists. Like the other man from the Netherlands who has been sucked to the cafes of Paris, who dances to modern jazz music and who works like as a Zen monk with the colors red, blue and yellow. The tree became his vehicle to arrive at an innovative abstraction that embraced the curious world.
I sit next to the woman with her sky blue dress. She whispers about red trees and yellow wheat fields while I lose myself in the aroma of the aniseed absinthe.

Aside from my own little story here above, it is remarkable how many stories this painting evoked in people.
For example, that the Muse is sitting under the tree so that the shadow of the tree falls over her. How beautiful to link this vision to the history of the tree in question. Or that the red tree structure indicates the lung tissue, which indeed is similar. Trees are the lungs of the earth. Or that the tree structure is the veins that push the juices of the tree through the body. For me it gives a feeling of happiness when people come to me to tell what they are seeing while looking at the painting.
I wish for my paintings to make you dream, to inspire your ideas and to give you a lot of colorful days!

In a short docu I show you my latest series of paintings in my studio. In Dutch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPrjF3D0Irs&t=61s Living in a not-too-big city in the south of the Netherlands, the Dutch visual artist Sylvia Thijssen walks every day to her studio. It is a four kilometers walk wherein she crosses two small rivers. It is an excellent distance to free her mind of domestic affairs for to let the muse in. It is in this sunny, personal space that she paints her colorful canvasses, in active gestures big and small, like dancing, always trying to hear the colors sing together, searching for an energy wherein is also the peace of a moment in eternity, taking time as if the paint forms a structure that grew and matured. Thijssen is not thinking of her work as making paintings, no, these are adventures. Exciting adventures for her as a painter to make new experiences for the one who is looking at them. These adventurous paintings are meant to wander the mind and to wonder the eye. See also her website: http://www.sylviathijssen.nl
